2022 Writing Log 11

March was a hectic and unpleasant month. Thankfully, the weather is getting warmer, and I’m regaining the will to live. Here’s what I’ve been up to during the first week of April…
- I edited and added more content to Chapter 2 and Chapter 6 of The Demon King. These are the two chapters that I wrote from scratch to contribute a small bit of exposition to the beginning of the story. I still like the idea of Ananth writing portions of the text himself, but I decided to approach this in a slightly different way that’s hopefully less obnoxious and more engaging.
- While I was at it, I got started on Chapter 7 and spent more time editing the overall story outline.
- I submitted a writer application to At the End of Everything, a Night in the Woods fanzine. I’m super excited about this project. Fingers crossed!
- I edited and submitted the final draft of “The New Kid in Postwick,” my story for Your Journey Awaits, a Pokémon fanzine. I haven’t written Pokémon fanfic since college, and I’ve come a long way since then. I’m really proud of this piece! The zine’s Twitter account posted my contributor profile (here), and it looks very cool if I do say so myself.
- I wrote a longer and more cohesive review of the visual novel Cross the Moon, which I posted on my personal blog (here). TLDR: Cross the Moon isn’t so much a game as it is a legit horror novel presented in visual form. Although it bills itself as a murder mystery with vampires, it’s actually more of a Stephen King style psychological thriller that gradually expands into cosmic horror, sort of like Stranger Things. It’s fantastic, and I loved it.
- I also posted my “Writing While ADHD” essay on my blog (here). This was originally written for the Get Your Words Out community (here) on Dreamwidth, but I thought I’d post it publicly since so much of the “writing while ADHD” material I found while doing research is stupidly offensive.
- I’ve been working on a review of Kikuko Tsumura’s novel There’s No Such Thing As An Easy Job. It was published in the United States last summer, and I’m kicking myself for taking so long to get to it. It’s one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read during the past few years, so much so that I feel that it was written for an audience of me specifically. I should be able to post the review on my book review blog this coming Monday.
- I drew a three-panel comic about how I aspire to become the sort of person who doesn’t tolerate bad behavior. I don’t think this is worth posting on Tumblr, but I put it on Twitter (here).
I got a few unpleasant emails that came out of nowhere at the beginning of the week, and I’ve been feeling much saltier than average. I think I’m going to take a break from my laptop for the rest of the weekend and go outside and touch grass.
