- I returned to Chapter 4 of The Demon King to polish the language and retcon a few details. In a testament to how confusing time travel would be irl, it turns out that jumping back and forth through the story is a lot to process. I’m going to try to keep things linear for the time being and work on one chapter a week, in order.
- I edited and posted my review of Kikuko Tsumura’s novel There’s No Such Thing As An Easy Job on my Japanese book review blog (here). It’s a lovely set of connected stories about workplace not-quite-drama that’s way more interesting than it has any right to be. The flat affect of the first-person narrator and hints of magical realism remind me a lot of Haruki Murakami, and Tsumura’s novel is just as fun and compulsively readable as Murakami without the dream rape and weird sexualization of preteen girls. It’s one of my favorite books from the past few years honestly.
- I drew the potted Monstera plant that lives on the windowsill next to my desk, and I posted the drawing on Tumblr (here). This is the first in a series of hyper-saturated botanical illustrations that I intend to turn into small stickers and sell as a set.
- Speaking of selling things, I participated in the Etsy strike this week. I wrote a short explanation of why sellers are striking on Etsy, and I posted it on Tumblr (here). Apparently this resonated with people? Idk how social media works, but I’m happy that people shared this.
- I recently applied to a bunch of zines. I was thinking that I would be accepted to, like, one of them? Maybe?? It turns out that I was accepted to all of them. Which was a pleasant surprise and an incredible honor! But also, there was a lot of onboarding, which meant filling out various forms for pitches and contributor spotlights. I put way too much thought into this sort of thing, and it always takes longer than I expect.
Yeah, so… I edited a chapter of a novel and drew a potted plant while futzing around on Discord. For what it’s worth, I also put a lot of time and attention into classes and grading this week. Next week is the final week of the semester, and I have a lot of plans for what I’m going to do when I’m free. Such as:
- Commission another Demon King illustration.
- Commission a cover for my botanical horror zine.
- Get started on my paper for the Toronto Comic Arts Fest.
- Get back into Elden Ring maybe??
- Drinking!
