2022 Writing Log 20

- I edited Chapter 9 of The Demon King and added about 1,500 words. This is the final chapter of the first story arc, so I decided that it would be a good time for the reader to learn more about Ceres, especially her relationship with her stylish nonbinary murder friend Weive.
- Not an accomplishment, but an observation: It’s been surprisingly difficult to rewrite this story as I edit it into a proper novel. I hereby apologize to everyone to whom I blithely suggested that they should just file off the serial numbers of their fanfic and submit it for publication.
- I wrote the first half of Chapter 13 of The Demon King. This chapter contains a flashback to Ananth’s first forays into time travel in the immediate wake of the apocalypse. My favorite line is “And that was when Ananth learned how to use a gun.”
- Your Journey Awaits! A Pokémon Fanzine is now available to download for free via Itchio (here). A lot of free fandom zines have somewhat variable quality, but this one is really good. The download also includes all sorts of lovely digital extras. Despite this zine being relatively low-profile, it contains the work of numerous BNF artists whose illustrations routinely get thousands of notes on social media, so it’s worth checking out. I think that, if I had encountered this sort of high-quality free digital zine when I was the appropriate age to care about Pokémon, I would have been so excited that I would have literally shit myself with joy. Okay, maybe not literally, but you know what I mean. It’s good stuff.
- This week I’ve mainly been working on my paper and slideshow for my presentation at the academic symposium attached to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. The main exhibition hall of the TCAF is free and completely open to the public, but the symposium has limited ticketing that sold out almost immediately. Which is fucking wild, but okay! Sure! I guess! Anyway, the schedule is (here), and I posted more about my paper (here).
- I posted the second part of my “Cosmic Horror Hylia” comic on Tumblr (here). I am really fucking proud of the skeletons in the second panel, just so everyone knows.
- I took a short break from drawing plants in order to draw some flowers. (Here) are some morning glories, and (here) are some wisteria. The linework and coloring on both of these pieces is extremely limited, but I wanted to experiment with (a) using negative space in a composition, and (b) drawing things quickly without obsessing over color. Including the initial test sketches, I finished both pieces in under two hours, which is super quick for me.
- And finally (here) is my sketch of the Capra Demon from Dark Souls. The deadly sin he represents is gay pride.
I also did a bunch of work related to my actual job this week, including peer review, book review edits, translation edits, and so on. It was all very boring and not worth talking about. Most of my job is boring and not worth talking about tbh. Next week I’m going to Canada for the TCAF, and with any luck the border crossings will be boring as well. If you have any boring vibes, please send them my way.
