2022 Writing Log 24
Jul. 9th, 2022 07:15 am- I submitted an original horror story called “Ms. Weaver’s Halloween Candy” to a new YA horror magazine called The Maul, which describes itself as “somewhere between Stephen King and RL Stine.” That is an uncannily precise description of the tone and content of my story, so I took a chance and sent it to them even though it’s a bit over the maximum wordcount. Submitting fiction is always a crapshoot, but I hope they enjoy it.
- I edited my review of Sarah Winifred Searle’s YA graphic novel The Greatest Thing, added some images, and formatted it for posting on Women Write About Comics.
- I finished my story about The Ring for Fright!, a classic horror movie fanzine. It’s a quiet and peaceful story about the deaths of the last humans on earth.
- I’m still working on Chapter 15 of The Demon King, which sets up the main conflict of Ceres’s storyline in this arc of the story. I’ve been stuck on this chapter for the past two weeks because I didn’t know what form the conflict should take. I intended for a recently introduced character to be the villain, but I realized that the conflict he represents would be much more interesting if he were a decent person with good intentions. The real villain is Ananth. Always has been.
- Speaking of which, I commissioned Chrisnazgul on DeviantArt to draw a Dark Souls style illustration of Ananth losing his shit toward the end of the story. You can find the illustration (here). It’s not exactly how I envision the character, to be honest, but it’s extremely epic nontheless.
- I finished editing and formatting all six stories in my botanical horror zine. I also added some graphics.
- I ordered a vinyl sticker of this illustration to include with the zine as a freebie.
I requested a lot of commissions this week, I guess. I’m currently working on a few creative projects that are going to take time to finish, and I’ve been trying to pace myself so I don’t burn out. In the meantime, it’s nice to be in touch with talented people and watch them make progress instead.
