2022 Writing Log 29
Aug. 20th, 2022 08:26 am- I posted the syllabus for my new “Japanese Ghost Stories” class on my website (here). The page also has a link to a Dropbox folder with PDF files of the course readings.
- I wrote and submitted a short story to a literary zine called Wind Guide You, whose call for submissions is (here). The theme is “poetic prose about getting lost in a video game world.” My story is called “The Castle Guard,” and it’s about a minor NPC who is recycled across multiple games. She doesn’t realize she’s a video game character, so the text repeats and twists back in on itself to mirror the maze of her confusion. This probably isn’t what the editors are looking for, but I really enjoyed writing the story.
- I created an illustration of the character Tenar from Ursula LeGuin’s novel The Tombs of Atuan and posted it on Tumblr (here). I was inspired by the design of the Talisman item in Dark Souls, which I found in the game’s art book. I shamelessly lifted the model from Shutterstock because I wanted to focus on the clothing. I generally put a lot of thought and care into character poses, but this piece follows my philosophy of “it’s okay to cut corners on work no one will ever see.”
Not a lot going on this week. Just enjoying the weather and taking it easy. 🍹

Date: 2022-08-23 04:37 pm (UTC)I was just thinking about rereading The Tombs of Atuan since I had re-read Wizard of Earthsea last year. This has reminded me of that.
