Speaking of discourse, something that was bothering me about Elden Ring is the way that the game seems to suggest that a "superior" class of people - meaning the ruling elite - managed to maintain their sanity during the event that caused the world's collapse, while the "common" people all turned into mindless zombies.
Now that I've gotten deeper into the story, however, I realize that a lot of the former rulers have become mindless zombies too. And a few of them, if they're not mindless yet, they're definitely getting there.
Something I appreciate is that most of the professional wizards have not in fact lost their minds. They're not corrupted or insane; they're just making a conscious decision to be antisocial assholes. And if "fighting petty battles while the world burns around them" isn't an accurate assessment of academia, I don't know what is.
