I am reconsidering my stance on minimalism.

This year is going to be the first Halloween that I live in a house, and I don’t know what to do. I mean, I guess my husband and I will drive out to Western Pennsylvania and buy some pumpkins from the Amish. Or something. We don’t really have a porch so much as a set of stairs, but we have room to put out one or two pumpkins. I guess, while we’re out of the city, we should go to Target and get some candy. Or something. Maybe they have fun things at the Costco in New Jersey idk.

Anyway, the other day I had a bit too much to drink and ordered a stupid Halloween decoration on Amazon, (this one right here). It’s a plastic, battery-operated electric candle that’s about a foot tall and has an orange spooky-themed snow globe in the middle. It’s on the border between tasteless and actually kind of neat. The glitter embedded in the plastic gives it a firm push in one direction, but I’m not really sure what direction that is.

My husband has started to carry this candle around the house so that it can sit next to him while he watches tv or answers emails or has a snack or whatever. I haven’t commented on this, and I don’t think he’s really noticed that he’s doing it.

But like. I don’t know how to put this. Is there not enough enrichment in his enclosure. Is he so starved for beauty in his immediate environment that he’s become attached to a cheap Halloween decoration I drunkenly bought on Amazon. I’m not sure how to have this conversation.

ETA: My husband says that we live in a beautiful house filled with beautiful art and plants, and that he likes the candle because he finds the soft orange light and swirling glitter relaxing. He says it's like visual white noise, which makes sense. I looked on Amazon to see if they have other electric snowglobe candles that aren't Halloween themed, but nope. Bats and ghosts it is.
