2023 Writing Log, Part Three
Jan. 22nd, 2023 08:56 am- I finished the third chapter of my Breath of the Wild Coffeeshop AU story and posted it on AO3 (here). I also finished the fourth and final chapter, but I’ll wait until next weekend to post it.
- I went ahead and commissioned an illustration of this story from Mirarasol, who does fantastic interior design art. There are a lot of interesting examples of her work on her Twitter (here), and I was thinking that this is the sort of thing I’d like to use as the desktop wallpaper for my laptop. I’ve been wanting to commission this artist for a while, and this seems as good of an excuse as any.
- Although I haven’t resumed work on the story itself, I commissioned Benveydraws to create an illustration of the Zelda character from my Breath of the Wild Classical Mythology AU. He posted it on Tumblr (here), and it’s gorgeous. I’ve worked with Benvey before, and it’s always a pleasure. His commission info is (here). His specialty is adult women, but he also draws young men and all sorts of Final Fantasy characters, and I can’t recommend him enough.
- Tangentially related, but I did a bit of research into ancient Greek clothing and hairstyles. Damn I wish I could get away with wearing that sort of thing. I collected a bunch of image references that I’d like to use for my own art one day. Maybe when the Hades sequel comes out?
- After sweating and screaming and crying and almost dying of anxiety, I wrote the editor at Unwinnable to say that I would need more time to write my essay about Elden Ring.
- Two days later, after the editor kindly readjusted his schedule, I finished my essay about Elden Ring and sent it to him. I am very professional and easy to work with lmao.
- The take-away point is this: Every nonfiction editor says that they don’t want you to actually write your article before you pitch it to them. That actually makes perfect sense, and also maybe it works for writers who aren’t ADHD. I don’t think having ADHD makes me irresponsible by default, but it can sometimes mean that I’m a poor judge of how long anything is going to take. I think that, for my ADHD ass at least, maybe it might be worthwhile to write a complete rough draft of an essay before I pitch it. And then, if the pitch is accepted, that’s when I can edit it.
- Anyway! I drew a stupid comic about gendered double standards in literary fiction. I drew it very quickly and cut a lot of corners, but I went ahead and posted it on Tumblr (here).
If you’re curious, the reason I’m writing a lot of Breath of the Wild fanfiction these days is because I’ve been playing a lot of Breath of the Wild. It’s a good game.
