Content warning for obnoxious Professor Karen behavior resulting in unnecessary police activity.
I’ve been obsessed with my new novel project for the past week, so I went into my office on campus yesterday afternoon to try to force myself to catch up on classwork.
I was unlocking the door when this woman in her 40s comes out of her office and goes, “Who are you.”
I didn’t pick up on her tone right away, so I smiled and was like, “Hi, I’m Kathryn. I’m in the East Asia department upstairs. I don’t think we’ve met?”
Instead of giving me her name, she’s like, “Why are you dressed like that.”
I wasn’t wearing a suit, but I also wasn’t wearing, like, sweatpants. I had on jeans and a blazer over a plaid shirt. Idk, nothing special, but I can get that she thinks I’m dressed down. So I sort of laugh, and I’m like, “This is my writing uniform. I got really into a project and realized that I’m behind on grading, so I came to the office to make myself sit down and catch up before the weekend. You know how it is.”
She was like, “Why have I never seen you before.”
At this point I’m a little creeped out, so I’m like, “I just moved down from the eighth floor over the summer, and I’m still trying to get back into the swing of coming to campus after the pandemic. I’ll see you around.” And then I waved at her, went into my office, and closed the door behind me.
Ten minutes later there’s a knock on my door. I get up to answer it, and it’s the police.
They’re like, “We received a report of a suspicious person. Can we see some ID.”
So I showed them my driver’s license, my faculty ID, and my faculty webpage, plus the sign beside the door with my name on it and my log-in on the university server where I’m grading quizzes.
They apologized and left.
That whole scene was unexpected, to say the least. I went back out into the hall and knocked on the door of the professor who called the cops on me. I was like, “Listen, I’m sorry, I think we got off on the wrong foot. I just wanted to introduce myself – ”
But then she interrupts me, like, “There’s no reason for me to talk to you,” and she shuts the door in my face. In my face!
So that was wild. Every once in a while I think I should go out and spend more time talking to people, but I always forget that people are like this.
