2023 Writing Log, Part Nine

- I’m still plugging away at the nanotech novel. I’m about halfway through Chapter 8 and Chapter 9.
- I edited the third and final chapter of “The Ritual of Lomei Labyrinth,” my Breath of the Wild Classical Mythology AU. I’ll give it another week to breathe before posting it.
- I finished another (hopefully final) round of edits for “Hyrule’s Finest Teas and Imports,” my Breath of the Wild Coffee Shop AU. Once the illustration is finished, it will be ready to share!
- I did the final edits for “A Legend of Shadows,” the story about Ganon that I created for the Hyrule Apocrypha zine. My artists did some fine illustration work, which was incredibly inspiring. In fact, the work that everyone has put into this zine is bizarrely fantastic for it being such a small project. Now that all the contributions have been finalized, the zine’s contributor lineup has been posted on Tumblr (here).
- I was accepted to the Hyrule Fashion Anthology, whose Twitter account is (here). This was a giant surprise! Since the mods and guests for this project are all BNFs, I totally wasn’t expecting this. I’m a little star struck, not to mention a little nervous. I hardcore sweated over my contributor bio and the pitches I wrote for the onboarding form, and it took me a good five days before I finally able to hit send and join the Discord.
- I applied to Monsters & Myths: A 13 Day Halloween Advent Calendar and Zine, whose Twitter account is (here). This is an ongoing annual project that performed really well last year, so I have high hopes. I enjoyed writing pitches for the application, and I’m proud of the ideas I came up with!
- My editor at Unwinnable returned my Elden Ring essay with feedback, so I dropped everything to take care of that ASAP. Truth be told, this process was a lot of fun. A good editor is worth their weight in gold.
- I pitched the (already written) first chapter of my Wind Waker project to Polygon. It’s a really good pitch, I think! Still, if I don’t hear back from Polygon by Monday afternoon, I have a few other places lined up (here).
There’s not much going on; I’m just patiently waiting for warmer weather.

Date: 2023-03-19 12:13 am (UTC)It's embarrassing to admit this, but I get the feeling that almost everyone who submitted to the anthology was accepted. Ditto for Myth & Lore magazine in general.
I'm given to understand that this is how publishing used to work until fairly recently. If you weren't a completely unhinged individual, and if you weren't writing completely incomprehensible garbage, there was a good chance that your work would be accepted if you submitted it to the right venue. Unfortunately, the competition to be published has gone completely off the charts these days. The only way I've been able to publish anywhere is because I was occasionally able to sneak into underappreciated venues before they were bombarded by submissions.
