Salt and Sanctuary is a Soulslike Metroidvania from 2016 that is especially Soulslike. It’s difficult, it’s punishing, it’s filled with pointlessly complicated gameplay systems, and it’s never clear where you’re supposed to go or what you’re supposed to be doing. In addition, the game is visually dark (meaning that you can’t see), and the art isn’t great.
I’m playing Salt and Sanctuary because I can’t just keep playing Ender Lilies and Blasphemous on an endless loop. Also, the writing is surprisingly decent, and I’m given to understand that the game starts off slowly but gets interesting about halfway through.
I took the plunge on Salt and Sanctuary because it’s currently on super-sale on the Nintendo Switch store, possibly in anticipation of the release of its sequel, Salt and Sacrifice. Based on what I’ve seen, the art of Salt and Sacrifice is much more polished and has a richer color palette that seems to be inspired by Hollow Knight. The promo screenshots also hint at fungal horror, my favorite thing. Unfortunately, Salt and Sacrifice releases two days before Tears of the Kingdom, so... yeah. In the meantime, I might as well enjoy Salt and Sanctuary for as long as it keeps being fun.
