2023 Writing Log, Part Twelve
Apr. 2nd, 2023 10:49 am- I finished the first chapter of my Elden Ring monster romance story, which I’ve decided to call “Varré’s Bouquet.” I think this piece is going to have three chapters, and that it will be around 4k words. I could write more, but I’m not convinced there’s an audience. This story is a special treat for myself.
- I finished formatting the third edition of my Haunted Houses zine and sent it to the printer. Megan Crow (who is here on Instagram) did a wonderful job on the new cover illustration. I don’t think she’s posted it anywhere, but I secretly hosted the image (here) on Tumblr if you’d like to take a look.
- The old illustration is still my favorite thing, so I used it to design some nice cloth-textured bookmarks. I got those printed along with stickers and an ACEO to go with the new edition.
- I drew a fieldmouse with a mouth full of clover. I posted it on Tumblr (here). As soon as I posted it, I realized it was filled with mistakes. I decided not to care.
- I did another DTIYS challenge, this one for Moon_BK9 on Instagram. I’m not sure if their character is a magical moon princess or just a very pretty man, but I decided to go for strong transwoman vibes. Mainly I just wanted to use a new Photoshop brush to paint sakura. I posted my illustration on Tumblr (here).
- I think I might have hit a wall with the semi-realistic style I used on these two pieces. I have two more character illustrations planned for this coming week, and I’d like to try a more cartoonish and cel-shaded Studio Ghibli style for both of them.
- I did a ton of grading this week, which was essentially me spamming positive feedback at my students. I feel like, at the point in the semester, they need it. I also wrote a few reference letters, made the follow-up calls to ensure that the kids actually get what they’re applying for, and threw my (admittedly slight) weight around to guarantee that the graduating seniors in my department get nominated for university awards.
This week I have been filled with dread. I keep stopping myself and being like, There’s no reason for me to feel like this, but I guess it’s just lingering trauma from last week. That sort of thing has a chemical impact your brain, and there’s not much you can do except stay chill and wait it out.
