I Love Sewer Levels
Apr. 21st, 2023 02:45 pmI’m playing Ender Lilies yet again, and I realized that one of the things I appreciate about the game is that it has a great sewer level. So does Elden Ring, now that I think about it. I love sewer levels! This is what makes a great sewer level:
1. Lots of water
2. Dark (but not too dark)
3. Mazelike (but not too mazelike)
4. Interesting artificial lighting effects
5. Interesting sound and echo effects
6. Contrast between tunnels and giant open spaces
7. Sprawling, but mostly (or completely) optional
8. Challenging, but offering excellent rewards
Here are some bonus bits that are always nice:
1. Creepy plants
2. Dead subway trains
3. Rodents of unusual size
4. Completely submerged areas
5. Strong implication that people died there
6. Unexplained rooms, like a church or library
7. Sunlight breaking through a hole in the ceiling
8. Disgusting Freudian feces-eating sewer dragons
I don’t think I’d want to play an entire game set in a sewer, but I really love when bright and open games give you an opportunity to go underground. If Breath of the Wild had a sewer level, it would have been epic.
