Chasm is a fantasy adventure pixel-art Metroidvania (sort of) that originally came out in 2018 on Steam and is now available on Nintendo Switch. I played it for about an hour on the plane, but it’s not for me. My impression of the game is that…

- The proc-gen levels are too long,
- and they feel extremely generic.
- The characters are also super generic.
- There’s a ton of text that doesn’t mean anything,
- so the game gets off to a very slow start.

Proc-gen levels make sense in a Rougelike, but I expect a good Metroidvania to feature more of a hand-crafted environment. If I’m not gradually learning new abilities in order to explore a meticulously crafted map, what’s the point?

Also, I appreciate that the world of the game is inhabited, and I like how your job is to repopulate towns by rescuing people from dungeons. Still, there’s way too much text, and none of it is particularly good. I don’t need to scroll through twenty text boxes of some rando telling me, “The villagers have been kidnapped by goblins, please go rescue them.”

Chasm is fairly decent for what it is, and I think I would have enjoyed it when I was younger. It seems like there’s a lot of potential grinding for experience and gold, which I definitely would have loved when I was a kid. Now that I’m older, though, I prefer a shorter and more curated experience.
