I love Haruki Murakami, although I can understand why people hate him. My least favorite novel of his is probably Dance Dance Dance, but a close second is Pinball, 1973. Both of them have all the elements of his stories I find gross, including the suicidal girlfriend and the manic pixie sex girl/s. Still, what I like about Pinball, 1973 is how the twenty-something narrator, who is drifting through life aimlessly, thinks he can find some sense of purpose if he is able to locate this one pinball cabinet he was obsessed with in high school.

Wind Waker came out in 2003, so I didn't play it until my freshman year of college, but it's something like that for me. I was obsessed with the game for a few months, and my engagement with it helped me to focus and keep my head down during the shitstorm that was my life at the time. Later on, in 2013, I became pathologically fixated on the idea that, if I bought a Wii U and played Wind Waker HD, it would help me get through another rough patch in the wilderness of Indiana. And it did.

Oddly enough, the message of the Wind Waker isn't something like "friendship and courage will overcome adversity" or "even one person can make a difference" or some such bullshit, but rather...

Sometimes you can't win, no matter how hard you try. Sometimes you need to give up. Sometimes you need to let things go.
