On one hand, I get it. On the other hand, I'm not sure it's worth the emotional energy to get upset about a silly recreational aesthetic that was popular for a few months on Instagram. Like I said, I totally understand the criticism of cottagecore. But at the same time, "I'm worried that my $2,500 dress reflects a Eurocentric worldview" is just not a problem that most people have.
And on my third hand, cottagecore began and continues to persist as a Japanese style called mori-kei ("forest style," whose practitioners are called "mori girls"), so I'm not sure it's entirely accurate to call the trend "white" or "Eurocentric." In fact, a lot of recreational aesthetics commonly criticized as "white" by the children of Tumblr, from bullet journal (techō) stationery to trendy dessert cafés, are actually East Asian or Asian-American.
And listen, I only have three hands. But if I had a fourth hand, this is the opinion it would be holding: Is it really so bad to want to go outside and touch grass and plant flowers.
