This post contains more yelling about the practical everyday business of being a writer.

This morning I sent a trio of messages to follow up on submissions. I'd rather die than cause any trouble to anyone ever, so I hate doing this.

Last summer, I happened to see a tweet by a transwoman writer saying that she never needed to advocate for herself or her writing when she identified as a man. Basically, she said that editors always used to get in touch with her, and that she never needed to create a schedule of follow-up emails after she submitted something.

I was like, Damn. I guess I need to create a schedule of follow-up emails after I submit things so that I don't get ghosted by editors. This doesn't always work, unfortunately, but it's better than passively allowing myself to be forgotten.

"Self advocacy" is definitely a skill I'm still trying to cultivate as a writer. This is difficult and I hate it, and also it would be nice to change my name to something more traditionally coded as masculine.
