2023 Writing Log, Part 34
Sep. 23rd, 2023 09:25 am- I’m still working on Chapter 18 of The Demon King. I also wrote a bit of Chapter 19.
- I got started on a story about Calip and Tauro in Tears of the Kingdom. I’m not sure about the title, but for the time being I’m calling it “Research Bros Fall in Love.”
- I started writing a story about Marlene discovering a cult devoted to Sephiroth in the ruins of Midgar. This is for the Final Fantasy VII Horror Week fandom event (here’s their Carrd). I don’t have a title for this one either, but I’m thinking of calling it “When There’s Nothing Left to Burn.”
- I wrote a mini-review of Carsten Henn’s bestselling novel The Door-to-Door Bookstore for WWAC. It’s a cute, feel-good story about the human connections facilitated by an independent bookstore in a quaint German town with a medieval city center. I talk about how the book is a story of resistance against Amazon-style capitalism, but really it’s just unironically sweet and wholesome.
- I also wrote a mini-review of Ben Hatke’s middle-grade graphic novel Things in the Basement. I cannot overemphasize how much I tend to dislike middle-grade graphic novels, but both the writing and the art in this one are incredible. If someone had given me this book on Halloween when I was a kid, I would have died and ascended directly to spooky heaven.
- For what it’s worth, I also read books that aren’t anodyne bestsellers or comics meant for children, but most of these books are difficult to recommend or even discuss in two paragraphs. Speaking of which…
- I wrote a lengthy review of the newest Hiromi Kawakami book in translation, Dragon Palace. This collection is full of disgusting men, deranged housewives, and weird taboo sex. I posted my review on my book review blog (here).
- I commissioned Myrthena on Twitter to draw Agnes, the heroine of An Unfound Door. I really love how this artist uses a Disney-inspired style to draw the heroines of classic novels, and she did a truly amazing job with the character. She posted the illustration on Twitter (here).
I’m still lowkey burning in anxiety hell due to a few environmental factors that are out of my control, but I’ve been doing my best to get out of the house and go for long walks. It’s starting to feel like fall here in Philadelphia, and I’m enjoying the mild weather and gold leaves.
