I was invited to give a panel at Casa Con, a 100% virtual convention held in December. This is what I came up with:
Apocalyptic Fantasies and Environmental Anxieties in Video Games
Have you ever wished the world would end? When playing postapocalyptic video games like Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring, or Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s tempting to fantasize about once-monolithic institutions broken and covered in vines as trees sprout from the ruins of cities. In this panel, we’ll investigate the appeal of the apocalyptic fantasies presented by open-world video games, as well as the real-world environmental anxieties underlying their stories, gameplay, and level design. We’ll also discuss the utopian possibilities suggested by digital dreams of a greener society – no apocalypse necessary!
...that sounds good, right?
Anyway, this is good. I was actually just thinking that I’d like to start doing con panels again. I haven’t really been outside of the tri-state area since the pandemic, and it would be nice to have an excuse to start traveling and seeing friends again.
