2023 Writing Log, Part 36
Oct. 6th, 2023 05:58 pm- I’m continuing to work on my story about Calip and Tauro in Tears of the Kingdom, “Love in the Time of Gloom Hands.” I commissioned an illustration from Martina Belli, and it’s turning out really well. I mean, really well. Fingers crossed that the story will be as interesting as the illustration.
- I started working on another Legend of Zelda horror story, “The Pillar of Hyrule,” which is about Impa and the sleeping princess in the ruins of the North Castle in Zelda II. The premise of this story is that Impa could end the cycle of violence in Hyrule once and for all by killing the sleeping princess, but she decides not to. While I was writing the plot outline, I realized that the story has stronggay gay homosexual gay Locked Tomb vibes, so I finally bought a copy of Nona the Ninth, which I’ll read after I finish the first draft.
- I finished and edited my review of Hiromi Ito’s short autobio essay collection Tree Spirits Grass Spirits and posted it on my book review blog (here). There are the typical bits of petty fat-shaming that you almost always get when Japanese people write about America, but otherwise? This book is perfect, and the translation is gorgeous. This is the essay collection about plants I’ve always wanted.
- Although it will be a few weeks before this is posted, I wrote a mini-review of Gene Wolfe’s epic dark fantasy tetralogy The Book of the New Sun for Women Write About Comics. This series was written in the early 1980s, and it shows its age in a few places, but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. The best way to describe The Book of the New Sun is that it’s like The Locked Tomb, but if The Locked Tomb weren’t thinly veiled Homestuck fanfiction.
- My mini-review of Ben Hatke’s middle-grade graphic novel Things in the Basement is included in the latest monthly recommendation post on Women Write About Comics (here). Things in the Basement is a super-fun Halloween adventure book, and I really enjoyed it. I didn’t include this in the mini-review, but the artist’s blog is very cool too.
- My essay on Evergrace (this one here) was featured on the Critical Distance weekly roundup (here). This is a huge honor, and I definitely cried.
I started another playthrough of Tears of the Kingdom last week, and it’s been keeping me busy. I’m enjoying the game much more the second time around.
