According to my expert PhD level analysis, the themes of Super Mario Bros Wonder are:
- big
- round
- huge
- chonking
- animals
and hallucinogenic drugs. It's a fun game!
One of the things I didn't like about Super Mario Odyssey was its commitment to sensory overload. In my view, at least, Odyssey was working overtime to target the demographic of young children who would otherwise have their eyes glued to microtransaction-laden mobile games. Super Mario Bros Wonder is still driven by short play cycles bookended by positive reinforcement, but it's relatively chill in comparison to Odyssey.
You can play as a range of characters, but I am playing as Yoshi. In addition to being absolutely adorable and making the full panoply of cute Yoshi sounds, Yoshi is (a) invincible and (b) mercifully unaffected by the weird inflation fetish power-up that turns you into an elephant.
I've only played a handful of stages so far, but the main conceit of this game seems to be that touching a "wonder fruit" temporarily transforms the environment in an interesting and unique way. For example, the big round huge chonking animals that were formerly obstacles may instead start carrying you through the level, likely while singing. I don't know who came up with this, but it's fucking magical.
"So Kathryn," you may be saying. "Are you going to write porn of this?" Yes of course I am, don't be silly.
