Blood and Soil (German: Blut und Boden) is a nationalist slogan expressing Nazi Germany's ideal of a racially defined national body ("Blood") united with a settlement area ("Soil"). This chapter analyzes the food economy of the Third Reich, arguing that the Nazi state relied on individual food acts (eating, cooking, and shopping) to create and maintain racial categories. It looks at the ways in which the country’s rationing program gave new categories of race, and especially the category of the Jew, bodily significance by shaping what people could and should eat. This also meant that racial belonging determined life by determining food supply. Not only Jews and other undesirable races but also Aryans were defined through the food system. This was done by Nazi agricultural discourse that linked racial health with controlling Eastern European farming land.

The idea that this is exclusively Athenian or Nazi, however, is mistaken. The Nazi ideology was built upon a century or more of idealization of Athens by the German Romantics and, this idealization was not unique to Germany. Wherever Athens was held in esteem and a central component of elite education, ideas of “Manifest Destiny” exist. For these contemporary white supremacists, Manifest Destiny happened and it happened at the expense of “white, European blood,” blood that “soaked” the soil. That makes this land, in their twisted worldview, “theirs” — but only if one ignores all the African-Americans, Chinese, Mexican, Native Americans, or other of non-European descent whose blood was spilled in equal or larger amounts to make America what it has become.

Zelensky’s willingness to move away from Moscow and toward the West is, in Putin’s mind, an attempt to legitimize the “false” regime in Kyiv. The existence of an anti-Russian regime in what he views as rightfully Russian territory populated by rightfully Russian people is unacceptable to him — so unacceptable that he is willing to wage a costly and bloody war over it.

Hindu mobs have killed dozens of Muslim men. The murders, which are often instigated by Bajrang Dal members, have become known as “lynchings,” evoking the terror that swept the American South after Reconstruction. The lynchings take place against a backdrop of hysteria created by the R.S.S. and its allies—a paranoid narrative of a vast majority, nearly a billion strong, being victimized by a much smaller minority.
