Someone wrote a novella-length essay about Disco Elysium, and it's very good. I really enjoyed this.
The marketing of Disco Elysium is not great, and its opening half hour is rough. I think what I needed to convince me to keep playing this game was a thorough explanation of its themes and story unburdened by petty concerns over spoilers, and this essay is a treasure. To better understand the context of the essay, I also read the game's Wikipedia entry, which is quite thorough as well.
I'd originally tried Disco Elysium in February 2022, but the unintuitive and glitchy user interface made the Nintendo Switch version unplayable. I read that they've since patched the game to be more console-friendly, so I downloaded it again and started from my previous save, thereby skipping the horrible opening.
It turns out that Disco Elysium is brilliant and creative and funny and kind, and I am in love.
