2023 Writing Log, Part 43

rynling- I edited Chapter 10 of my original gothic mystery novel An Unfound Door. This required heavy revisions, and I had to write an entirely new scene. I was in “just get it on the page” mode when I wrote this chapter, and having to return to such a garbage first draft inflicted serious psychic damage.
- I edited Chapter 11. This one wasn’t so bad. I added a bit more text, but it’s still a short chapter. It’s going to be a good place to put more information later, but first I need to get deeper into the story to figure out what that information is.
- I decided to make a Philadelphia folklore zine called “Weird Things Happen in Philadelphia.” I edited three earlier pieces of writing and wrote two more stories from scratch, one of which is the “Sweet Blue House” post I made (here) on Dreamwidth. I’ve got an idea for a third new story, but I’ll have to do a bit of research first.
- I’m still working on the slideshow for my panel “Postapocalyptic Fantasies and Environmental Anxieties in Video Games” for Casa Con. I’ve got the intro and the sections about the historical context, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom. Now I need to do the section about Elden Ring and the conclusion. This has been slow going, but I’m getting there.
- To get the necessary graphics for my talk, I’ve been running around in Tears of the Kingdom and taking photos of its Zen-style gardens. This inspired me to draw another lotus flower, which I posted on Tumblr (here). I’m not into Buddhism or anything, but I never get tired of drawing lotus flowers. I just think they’re neat.
It’s been warm and rainy this week, and the moss on the cinderblock wall surrounding my tiny concrete backyard is thriving. May we all be so green and healthy here at the end of the year.
