- I finished the third section Chapter 12 of An Unfound Door, thus finishing the chapter. I’m really enjoying working on this story every morning and evening. Progress is slow but steady!

- I worked with the magical and amazing Samijen to create a portrait of Fhiad, one of the two main characters in An Unfound Door. When Sami posted the illustration (on Tumblr here), it didn’t get a lot of engagement, which is strange. I’ve been following her art for years, and I might be biased, but I think this is one of the strongest and most interesting pieces of work she’s done. People have no taste, because it really is a gorgeous illustration.

- Empowered by this collaboration, I put the first chapter of An Unfound Door through another set of edits and submitted it as a writing sample to accompany an application to one of the Odyssey workshops beginning early next year. Fingers crossed!

- I’m working on an original short story called “Yearwalking,” which is about freezing to death and rotting during the spring thaw. I guess you could say this is botanical horror, but really it’s more about the joy and peace of a botanical afterlife.

- I’m also working on a Final Fantasy VI story about Edgar and Sabin and political intrigue and murder. The story doesn’t have a name yet, but I’ve been having an interesting time returning to the game and taking notes.

- I wrote a mini-review of Vandana Singh’s short story collection Ambiguity Machines for the monthly book recommendation post on Women Write About Comics. I’ve been reading this book very slowly across the calendar year, and it’s been a constant source of inspiration. I felt a real sense of loss when I finished it, but I guess I can always start over from the beginning next year.

- I drew a portrait of my nemesis the opossum that visits my backyard every night and posted it on Tumblr (here). It’s a cute animal, but I wish it would stop getting into my outdoor trash bin.

- I drew a two-panel comic about ChatGPT and posted it on Tumblr (here). It’s extremely frustrating when people use ChatGPT to write entire bodies of text with no human input except the initial prompt, but the ethics of AI are complicated. Personally speaking, as someone with dyslexia and ADHD, I’m extremely grateful to the AI that catches my typos in Google Docs.

- I finally finished the slideshow for my talk “Postapocalyptic Fantasies and Environmental Anxieties in Japanese Video games,” which I’m going to be giving at Casa Con this weekend. I’m really nervous for some reason, but I’ll be okay. It’s always fun to talk about video games, and I hope I get lots of interesting comments from the audience.

During the past two weeks, I finished up the semester in a flurry of grading and emails and reference letters. All of my classes were full, yet I somehow managed to carry everybody through without letting anyone get behind or fall through the cracks. Good job team!! I’m beyond exhausted, and I’m very much looking forward to planting myself on the couch and playing video games this weekend.
