and here are my writing samples:
The Lotus Girl . 1,250 words . (published in a free-to-download zine here)
This is an original story about a nature spirit who lives in a lotus pond behind a temple in the rural mountains of Japan. She befriends a human girl whom she ultimately eats, but the horror of the story is gentle. This piece demonstrates my ability to incorporate botanical themes into stories about supernatural beings, as well as my experience with researching the folklore and traditions of non-Western cultures.
The Girl in the Screen at the End of the World . 1,815 words . (on AO3 here)
This is a series of four short vignettes about a postapocalyptic future in which Sadako’s “Ring” curse has already killed most humans (the animals are fine). This piece demonstrates my ability to write short vignettes centered around a common theme.
Divine Beast . 2,023 words . (on AO3 here)
This is a short story based on Tears of the Kingdom in which Zelda returns to her human form after spending a thousand years as a dragon, and the premise is that she comes back strange. It’s not necessary to have played the game to understand this story, but it may be helpful to know that I read the (technically m/f) relationship between Link and Zelda as extremely queer. This piece demonstrates my ability to write the uncanniness of characters who are only marginally human with sensitivity, sympathy, and joy.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD COLLECTION OF STORIES IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF.
I am not prepared to have my heart broken when I get rejected from this project, so I'm putting on my Adidas tracksuit jacket over my plaid shirt and going straight to the liquor store so that I have whiskey on hand when it happens.
