Melissa is a free-to-play retro horror visual novel about a rudimentary dating game on an old library computer. If you’re okay with dying quickly, it takes about seven minutes to play, but you can add a few more minutes by trying to stay alive for longer. The game has an easy no-penalty save system, so you can save and restart at every dialogue choice to see what happens when you beg for mercy. Good luck!

I don’t have much to say about this one, save that it’s short and fun. It’s like an abbreviated version of Doki Doki Literature Club without all the weird anime bullshit. Both the graphics and sound design feel very textured and crunchy, and the writing gets in and gets the job done.

There’s a sequel called Morris...

...that is significantly longer (about 25-30 minutes) and also very good. The retro nostalgia appeal is amplified by oldschool internet dial-up sounds, and at certain points the game asks you to print things out on the library’s public printer, which makes adorable dinosaur noises. Aside from Morris, the game has two additional characters, both of whom are great. In the comments, a few people said that they’d happily date the evil older woman, and same.

It amuses me that these two characters are named after famous computer viruses. Speaking of retro nostalgia, I recommend checking out these two FBI website pages posted to celebrate the anniversaries of the viruses, if only for their top-notch banner graphics:

The Morris Worm

Anyway, it seems like the Melissa developer is making a full trilogy for Steam:

I'm excited about the third character, Anna, and I somehow managed to get myself invested enough in this world to be slightly curious about its lore. I'm not sure if this is going to be the game that convinces me to get a Steam Deck, but we'll see.
