- I finally finished Chapter 13 of An Unfound Door. This definitely did take an entire month! But, even if every chapter takes a month, I’ll be done with the novel by the end of the year. This is more than I can say for my progress last year.
- I commissioned Arte_072, who draws beautiful retro manga style portraits of the female characters of A Song of Ice and Fire, to draw Agnes from An Unfound Door. She did a wonderful job, and she posted the piece on Instagram (here). I had a great experience working with Arte, and her illustration is a treasure.
- I edited Chapter 3 of my Tears of the Kingdom Future Timeline AU Zelda/Ganondorf story Lay the Gods to Rest, and I posted it on AO3 (here). I also finished Chapter 4. It feels very nice to make steady progress on an indulgent project, and I’m happy I decided to go ahead and write this.
- I edited a short Final Fantasy VI postgame story about Edgar and Sabin called “A Senseless and Deadly Mistake” and posted it on AO3 (here). Sometimes I forget how much I love these characters, and this was very fun to write.
- I started writing an original story called “Limerick Incident Interview Protocol,” whose premise is that the nuclear plant next to Philadelphia (and Camden NJ, and Wilmington DE) had a meltdown like Fukushima. While doing research for the presentation I gave at Casa Con in December, I realized that the way a lot of people talk about Fukushima is kind of fucked up, and I thought it might be interesting to apply a similar discursive approach to Joe Biden country.
- I’ve been working on a set of notes for a presentation on “Indie Comics Publishing in the 2010s” that I’ll be giving at the University of Chichester in May. I posted rough drafts of the first two parts on Dreamwidth (here) and (here).
- I was invited to contribute a piece to a collected volume of essays about gender and environmentalism, so I wrote an abstract about my beloved Kyō Machiko, whose manga haven’t yet been translated despite her amazing popularity (on Instagram.
- While continuing to chip away at two larger pieces, I drew a few more quick face studies. They’re nothing special, I posted one of them on Tumblr (here).
- I managed to finish up one of the big pieces, a kokedama moss ball bonsai made from a human skull. This is for the January “decay” theme of the art challenge posted by Frankiesbugs (here), and I shared my drawing on Tumblr (here).
It snowed all week, and lo and behold, I now have seasonal affective disorder. I also managed to catch a cold. I’ve been doing my best to keep my act together, but I’ve also been spending a lot of time in bed. I hope everyone reading this is doing okay and staying warm.
