Well goddamn

I wish I had an article to link to, but this is super recent, so here goes me doing my best not to talk out of my ass:
Effective immediately as of this (Tuesday, February 6) morning, all fliers, social media content, and newsletters posted by the individual branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia system must be approved by the Mayor’s Office. This approval needs to go through three separate people: one in the FLP Communications Office, one in the Office of Children and Families, and one in the Mayor's Office. Once the content meets approval, notification of that approval needs to travel once more back down the chain.
I promised myself that I would take a break from talking about the United States funding war crimes in Palestine, but this is ridiculous. Can you imagine being so afraid of someone putting up a photocopied poster of a watermelon and an olive branch that you need to censor Instagram posts about Lego playtime story hour at the local library. For fuck's sake. What is going on with the Democratic party.
ETA: I dug into this a bit more, partially by word of mouth but mainly via Reddit. There are a few branches of the PFL who have been dealing with backlash against subtle Pro-Palestinian messaging, but most people agree that this policy is primarily about the new mayor being an incompetent administrator. The public communications approval process also applies to other city departments, who are upset that the new policy will have a significant impact on the timeliness of emergency warnings.
The Democratic party in Pennsylvania really is being unhinged about its support for Israel and Biden, though. Don’t get me started about John Fetterman (or Dwight Evans, the PA Representative famous for signing a bill saying that fleeing from a police officer is a “crime of violence”) or we will be here all day.
ETA 2: The Mayor's Office rolled back the policy just this afternoon, a day later (Wednesday, February 7). I think the moral of the story might be "don't fuck with librarians."

Date: 2024-02-09 12:14 pm (UTC)When it comes to more serious issues, the divide between what I think is a normal mainstream position and the official position of elected representatives is even more apparent. I guess everywhere with democracy is like that, but still. Sometimes I think about guillotines.
Anyway, Cherelle Parker (the new Philadelphia mayor) is something of a character, apparently. Half of the stuff she’s done since coming to office in January (like hiring a handsome personal driver), I’m like “What the fuck, but good for her”; and half of the stuff she does I’m just like “What the fuck.” I really enjoy her fashion sense though, so I'm not complaining too much.
