2024 Writing Log, Part Six
Feb. 11th, 2024 07:49 am- I wrote the second section of Chapter 14 of An Unfound Door. For this section, I cannibalized a scene from a fanfic I wrote years ago. I really liked that scene, so I edited it to fit into this story. The original piece of writing is unrecognizable, but it was a good foundation. Basically, I put a lot of research into creating an extremely minor scene, and I trust what I wrote then even if I can’t remember most of what I had to read in order to be able to write it.
- I finished Chapter 6 of Lay the Gods to Rest and posted it on AO3 (here). This story continues to be extremely self-indulgent. Is Ganon being intensely physical while also being intensely introspective and bitter as he navigates subterranean ruins? Fuck yes he is.
- I did another round of edits on a 1,500-word essay titled “Gender and Magic in Final Fantasy VI” and posted it on AO3 (here). Idk, this essay meant a lot more to me back in 2016 than it does now, but I’m glad it exists.
- I decided to collect a few of my meta essays about Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom under the title A Record of the Calamity. I posted the first in the series, “Ninja Lore in Breath of the Wild,” on AO3 (here).
- Since I’m only a few copies away from selling out of the second print run of my original dark fantasy zine Terrible People, I created a PDF copy and made it free to download on Itchio (here).
- I reopened my store on Etsy, by the way. The last remaining copies of Terrible People are the only thing there now, but I plan to restock gradually. I designed small stickers to accompany copies of my Seeded Ground minicomic, which I printed to give away for free at an in-person event last year that wasn’t well attended. I’m always afraid that I’m garbage, and that my art is garbage, but it’s always good to remind myself that I’m not hurting anyone by selling $4 zines on Etsy.
- I was invited to give a lecture version of my essay “How The Wind Waker Navigated Fan Expectations” (on Sidequest here), so I spent the week making a slideshow. This was a lot of work, but I had a great time. The Wind Waker is such a beautiful game.
- I signed up for the March of the Koroks art event hosted by Zelda Creators (on Twitter here), and I got started on my two pieces. I’m using this as an opportunity to study the traditional Disney “little bean” style of character drawing, and it’s been an interesting experience.
- To get away from all the Disney, I drew a Studio Ghibli style self portrait to use as a new avatar icon for Instagram. I posted it on Tumblr (here).
One of my goals for this spring is to archive some of my older writing, and I’m happy that I’m starting to get that squared away. It’s time to clear my mind for new projects.
