2024 Writing Log, Part Seven
Feb. 18th, 2024 09:55 am- I’m still plugging away at Chapter 14 of An Unfound Door. I know it’s a bit sad to write only 800 words a week, but that’s better than no words. I wish that I could put myself in a cabin in the woods until I finish this novel. Since I don’t have the time or the money for that, I’m just doing the best I can.
- I posted Chapter 7 of Lay the Gods to Rest (on AO3 here). Ganon gets a bit cheeky in this chapter. Before I began this story, I considered writing it as Link/Zelda instead of Ganon/Zelda, but I enjoy watching characters behave badly, and I don’t think Link has it in him to be as unapologetically mean and sarcastic as Ganon.
- I’m continuing to edit a few old Legend of Zelda meta essays, and I posted a short piece about “Governance in Hyrule” (on AO3 here).
- I applied to Residents of the Wild, a Legend of Zelda fanzine devoted to the NPCs of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I told myself that I was done applying to fanzines, but all I want to do on this earth is write about minor NPCs in the Legend of Zelda games. I doubt I’ll be accepted, as I think the mods are interested in more prominent NPCs than the ones whose stories I pitched, but maybe if I’m lucky I’ll get to write about Beedle (my beloved).
- For the sake of presenting more polished writing samples, I edited two older stories, “Lynel Mask” (about Kilton and Link in Breath of the Wild) and “Their Sworn Duty” (about Impa and Sooga in Age of Calamity). Since I don’t write much of anything under 1,500 words these days, I had to select some of my earlier stories for my samples, and oddly enough, I really enjoyed reading them.
- My mini-review of Umi Kusahara’s solo anthology Mothers is at the top of the “Best Manga of 2023” article on Women Write About Comics (here)!
- I submitted my “Sweet Blue House” story to an American folklore zine called Ghostwatch, and they accepted it for publication in their “My House Is Haunted” issue, which is available to preorder (here).
- I finished my two Koroks for the March of the Koroks event hosted by Zelda Creators. I can’t post them yet, but I think they turned out well.
- I’m slowly working on an illustration of Ganondorf holding one of the fat little Frox monsters that live in the Depths of Tears of the Kingdom. I intended to have this finished by Valentine’s Day, but Ganondorf is not easy to draw.
In other news, it snowed again this week, and all the ants in the alleyway decided to come inside to keep warm. I’ve decided not to worry about this too much, as they’ll undoubtedly head back outside once the weather is a bit sunnier. Until then, I’m trying to stay out of their way, and I wish them well.
