It turns out that the IGN walkthrough for Bloodborne isn’t great. It’s formatted as a giant wall of text, which is all the more difficult to parse because you can’t pause the game. The physical strategy guide for Bloodborne is $260 on Amazon, so… I mean, I’ll keep looking, but I guess I’m on my own for now.

Despite still not knowing my way around, I managed to find the first boss, the Cleric Beast. The Cleric Beast is a giant werewolf. Its size is its primary annoyance, especially in the confined space of the bridge where you fight it. Its attacks are fairly easy to dodge, but it has a giant health bar, and Cherry isn’t yet capable of doing a considerable amount of damage. “You’re going to have to sit here for at least ten minutes” is my least favorite type of boss, so I let Cherry die.

Thankfully, you don’t need to actually defeat the boss to progress the game. The very act of laying your eyes on the Cleric Beast gives you one point of “Insight,” a meter that apparently changes the world state as it builds. Now that Cherry has a bit of Insight, he can return to the Hunter’s Dream to find that a weird Victorian doll discarded in the graveyard is standing and talking. She’ll help you level up, and she also tells Cherry that the aborted fetuses are called Messengers. Good to know! Also, the church is now open, and there’s a workbench where Cherry can upgrade his saw cleaver.

To test the extent of the change in world state, I had Cherry go back and talk to all of the people hiding in their houses. The game apparently assumes that I’ve defeated the Cleric Beast, because the guy who sounds super sick apologizes that the gate at the end of the bridge is closed. He tells Cherry that he might be able to go a place called the Cathedral Ward through the aqueduct.

This was music to my ears. A sewer level? So early in the game?? Just for me????

I’m so happy! Now all I have to do is find the entrance.

IGN, how could you betray us this way.

(My usual go-to off IGN does not have Bloodborne, alas, and my computer is being an entire twit today so I cannot check my other go-to. Will report back if I have other success.)
