- I got started on Chapter 21 of An Unfound Door, my original gothic fantasy novel. This chapter asks the question: How do you feel about underground rivers flowing through vast caverns filled with bioluminescent moss?

- I finished my “Short Free Horror Games on Itch.io, Part 2” article for Sidequest. I’ve been working on this in bits and pieces since January, so it feels fantastic to finally submit the manuscript.

- I finished writing the syllabi for my Spring 2025 classes. I’m planning on teaching a new class on the topic of “Animals and Nature in Japanese Culture,” so I also submitted all the course approval paperwork to the university. This is going to be a fun class, I think.

- This week’s post on my book review blog covers the academic monograph Being Dead Otherwise, which is about the shifting cultures of death and dying in contemporary Japan. Despite the seemingly grim topic, it’s actually a very chill and hopeful work of anthropology drawn from years of interviews with energetic communities of elderly people, forward-thinking Buddhist priests, and optimistic young death workers. Idk, sometimes scholarship is surprisingly interesting and entertaining. You can read the review (here).

- I drew the fifth panel of my “Trees in Video Games” minicomic. This one is about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and I posted a textless version on Tumblr (here). After finishing this, I immediately deleted the game from my Switch. Thank goodness. I am free.

Not much to report this week. My ADHD has been acting up. There’s often a gap between what I want to do and what I need to do, but this week I feel that I’ve really had to force myself to sit down and work. In the meantime, I’m continuing to do my best to stay off social media. Sometimes everything is just too much, and the only thing you can do is keep your head above water. But I can’t complain. The weather is perfect, and it’s been lovely to sit outside with my Steam Deck in my tiny backyard garden.
