Agnes is the crown princess of Faloren, a once-great kingdom now fallen to decay. She’s far more comfortable managing the affairs of state from behind a desk than she is at court, and she struggles to maintain her position during the prolonged illness of her father. While usually bookish and serious to a fault, Agnes reveals a more playful side when presented with the possibility of an adventure. Agnes initially aids Fhiad out of a sense of duty to redress the sins of her ancestors, but her curiosity compels her to neglect her responsibilities in order to pursue the mysteries he represents.

Fhiad is a legend from Faloren’s past, the prince of a neighboring kingdom who supposedly started a disastrous war more than a hundred years ago. In reality, Fhiad was an aspiring mage whose ambitions were entirely academic, and his lack of political acumen was taken advantage of by the princess of his era, Agnes’s direct ancestor. Fhiad was once charming and urbane, but he struggles to process what he lost through his displacement in time due to necromantic magic. Although he initially displays open hostility toward Agnes, his essential kindness and humanity reasserts itself as he comes to trust her.

Galien is Agnes’s cousin, a duke in his own right and a probable successor to the throne. Unlike Agnes, Galien is extroverted and well-suited to the social politics of court. Far from being rivals, Galien and Agnes are supportive of one another, and Galien wants nothing more than to help Agnes escape Faloren. Like Fhiad, Galien attended university in the coastal city of Cretia, where he met a young man named Caelif who pledged his service as Galien’s knight, courier, and lover. As a native son of Cretia, Caelif has little interest in the concerns of Faloren’s royalty and cares only for the wellbeing of Galien and Agnes.

Mylah is a semi-retired elder stateswoman who was a friend to Agnes’s late mother and currently serves as Agnes’s secretary and chief of staff. In addition to being aware of everything that transpires within the castle, Mylah is a skilled warrior who keeps her own counsel regarding the prohibition of magic in the kingdom. Mylah often joins forces with Guerig, the head seneschal to the King of Faloren. When they were younger, Mylah and Guerig accompanied Agnes’s parents on expeditions to explore the long-sealed portions of Faloren Castle, but both are reluctant to discuss what they discovered there.

I hope this isn't delusional, but I'm starting to think about the query letter. 😬

This is my one-sentence pitch for Fhiad to artists btw: "Fhiad is a traveling wizard detective investigating a series of murders at an isolated castle."

That's not who he is in this novel, but I have plans for him. The second I finish the first draft of the last chapter of An Unfound Door, I'm going to start writing my first short mystery story starring wandering wizard detective Fhiad.
