- I’m hard at work on the final chapter of An Unfound Door, my original gothic fantasy novel. This is the “what if everyone were normal and happy” part of the story I’ve wanted to write from the beginning. This chapter gives me a sense of what each character’s baseline personality is like when they’re not traumatized or facing some sort of crisis, and I think it’s going to be a good jumping-off point for editing the completed first draft.

- I also wrote short profiles of the novel’s main characters, which I posted earlier (here) on this blog.

- My essay about Ender Lilies, which is (here) on Sidequest, was featured on Critical Distance (here). This is the first time Critical Distance has included one of my research-based analytical essays in their weekly roundups! I feel like I’m finally starting to get somewhere with my writing.

- I wrote a review of the graphic novel HoverGirls for Women Write About Comics. This is the magical girl urban fantasy set in Los Angeles that I always wanted, and it’s perfect.

- I’m still working on listings to contribute to an article about horror comics for the website How to Love Comics. This week I wrote about the Shadow over Innsmouth manga adaptation and PTSD Radio.

- I’ve resumed work on my article “The Affective Economies of Indie Comics Publishing,” but it’s slow going. I haven’t written an academic essay since I was denied tenure back in March 2020 (fun times), and I’ve kind of forgotten how it’s done. Thankfully, the article isn’t due until 2025, so it’s probably okay if I take my time. If I write one sentence a day, that’s a paragraph a week, which isn’t an unreasonable pace.

- This week’s post on my book review blog is a mini-review of Maru Ayase’s novel The Forest Brims Over. This book is short and strange, but it gives me hope and courage to survive and thrive in the wilderness while being constantly shut out by literary gatekeepers. You can read my review (here).

I’m almost done with the first draft of my first original novel. Hopefully I can finish it this week.
