2024 Writing Log, Part 37
Sep. 29th, 2024 07:41 am- I’m still working on the ending of the last chapter of An Unfound Door. There’s no rush, so I’m taking my time and writing a few lines every day while editing the earlier sections.
- This week I was only able to edit Chapter 4 of An Unfound Door. In my defense, I had to rewrite almost everything. I originally intended the novel’s plot to be more complicated before deciding that those complications were detrimental to the story I wanted to tell. I therefore had to erase two unused characters while adjusting the behavior and motivations of two others. It’s a good chapter, though! The descriptive language is evocative and transports me right back to the settings I was envisioning, whether they’re based on driving through Vermont or walking through old castles in Germany.
- I posted my story for the Hyrule Apocrypha fanzine, “A Legend of Shadows,” on AO3 (here). This is a short story about young Ganondorf as a failed hero, and it’s set in the Forest Temple from Ocarina of Time. Saria makes an appearance at the end, and hopefully she comes off as extremely creepy.
- I’m still chipping away at my academic essay “The Affective Economies of Indie Comics Publishing.” This week I added two paragraphs and six footnotes, bringing the wordcount to 2900.
- For next month’s WWAC recommendations post, I wrote a mini-review of Morgana and Oz, a cute manga-style supernatural romance comedy on Webtoons that was just published as a physical book.
- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about The Deer King, Nahoko Uehashi’s newest epic fantasy in translation. My recommendation is to skip the book and check out Production I.G’s animated adaptation (here), which is one of the best anime movies I’ve watched recently.
- I also posted a review (here) of The Night of Baba Yaga, an adrenaline-fueled lesbian power fantasy about a street brawler pressed into the service of a yakuza crime syndicate. This book is nonstop violence, torture, and rape, and it’s not for everyone. Honestly I wouldn’t have reviewed it at all if the girlies on TikTok and IG weren’t calling it “an empowering queer love story.” It’s important to read a book before you post a review, I think.
- I drew a portrait of Zelda from Echoes of Wisdom and posted it on Tumblr (here).
- I finally finished the eighth panel of my “Trees in Video Games” minicomic. This one is about Bloodborne. I posted a textless version of the piece (here) on Tumblr.
Happy fall weather to all who celebrate! 🍂
