2025 Writing Log, Part Six

- I finished the second chapter of “The Last Green Knight,” a Zelda x Arthurian legend story for a pan-fandom big bang event. I ended up doing a fair amount of research concerning food for this chapter, which was super fun.
- I finished the fourth chapter of “What Dreams May Come,” a Bloodborne x Zelda crossover. My pace on this story has decreased considerably, but slow and steady wins the race.
- Although I’m (probably) not going to use this for the story, I commissioned RainbowPhilosopher to do a Bloodborne x Zelda illustration, and the piece she created is beautifully atmospheric. You can check it out on DeviantArt (here).
- Yes I still use DeviantArt. The site’s policy regarding AI isn’t great, and its homepage is filled with machine-generated slop. That being said, it’s been my experience that DA has become a refuge for indie artists interested in actively supporting one another, and this is especially the case for artists who aren’t American.
- Speaking of Zelda commissions, Ganonfan1995 created an absolutely incredible illustration for my fanfic novella Lay the Gods to Rest. When it comes to commissions, I’m usually happy with anything the artist creates, but this is honest-to-goodness professional quality work that would qualify for an Emmy nomination if it weren’t for a self-indulgent story about Ganondorf and Zelda. It’s truly lovely. You can check it out (here) on Tumblr.
- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about an award-winning manga called Kanda Gokurachō Shokunin Banashi, which collects five stand-alone stories about the everyday lives of artisans in the Edo period. Both the writing and the art are fantastic, and I hope this manga gets an English translation soon.
ETA: My review was shared on a few anime+manga news aggregator blogs, and just yesterday Yen Press announced that they’ve licensed the manga. It’s probably a coincidence, but it would be cool if my review helped spread the word about this amazing piece of art. Either way, this is excellent news.
- I also posted about Yoko Ogawa’s newest short story collection, Mimi ni Sumu Mono. Ogawa wrote these stories in collaboration with the Academy Award nominated animator Koji Yamamura, who created a short VR “interactive movie” based on the themes and imagery of the stories. This animation won numerous awards, but it requires a VR headset to access, so I had to stick to talking about the book itself. My review is (here) if you’re interested.
- It’s a shame that Women Write About Comics is going through a tough transition right now, but I’m excited to announce that I’m now officially a member of the graphic novel + manga review staff at Comics Beat. Huzzah!!
- I wrote a short essay titled “Crow Country Is a Game about Climate Change” and pitched it to Unwinnable. This is a long shot, but I’ve got my fingers crossed.
- I drew a confident and happy Korok and posted it on Tumblr (here). This was entirely for self-care purposes. I’m sick of cold and ice and freezing rain, and I wish it were spring already.
It was a busy week, but I powered through it despite the miserable weather. Now, lo and behold, I’ve caught a cold. It’s a nasty one, too. On top of that, I got a bunch of rejection emails. I’m so tired I can’t see straight, and I still have deadlines to meet. Only death can cure me now.

Date: 2025-02-17 04:59 pm (UTC)I'm still sick, unfortunately. I keep seeing headlines like "Viral sicknesses have risen in early 2025 amid the ongoing 'quad-demic' in the US," and that checks out on my end. Despite the plague and the miserable weather, I hope you're doing okay.
