I thought it was fairly normal to feel empathy for bad people.

This is a lengthy but interesting thread about why it's important not to slip into a fascist mindset. The OP was saying that, even though they firmly believe that Elon Musk needs to be arrested by Interpol and tried in international court, they feel bad that he was abused as a child. Even when you hate someone, they wrote, it's important not to dehumanize them.
Apparently, a bunch of Gen Z kids replied to say that privately held empathy for an individual human being is the same as public compliance in the crimes they've committed. There's one example of this sort of response in this thread.
Thankfully, other people stepped in to support the OP by explaining how ideological dehumanization is the first step to fascism, like so: Criminals are inhuman --> criminals should have no rights --> a certain group of people are all criminals --> that group of people should have no human rights.
And it's good that there are multiple people making this argument. You have to be careful not to drink the Nazi kool-aid. Case in point:
