So anyway, I guess it’s probably time to write another book.
These are the chapters I’m considering:
(1) Rewilding: Breath of the Wild + Tears of the Kingdom
Video games reframe narratives of real-world catastrophes.
(2) Ruined Empires: Dark Souls + Elden Ring
Video games illustrate the environmental consequences of imperialist rhetoric.
(3) Posthuman Ecofeminism: Final Fantasy VI + Final Fantasy VII
Video games make anticapitalist ideologies meaningful on an individual level.
(4) Pandemic: Hollow Knight + Ender Lilies
Video games allow us to process the dehumanizing trauma of disaster.
(5) Ecofascism: Twilight Princess + The Wind Waker
Video games get me, personally, cancelled on the internet.
That last chapter needs some work, maybe. Or maybe I’ve already said all there is to say on that topic, and I can let it rest. I think that’s probably for the best tbh. Also I’m getting kind of tired of the Zelda franchise. I want to be well and truly out of that fandom before the live-action movie comes out.
As an alternative, it might make sense to write a chapter about “apocalypse” on a more personal level. Like I think that, for a lot of queer people, there was a moment when the world completely shattered under the weight of the realization that mainstream society was not created to accommodate people like us. The same goes for disability, obviously.
I want to try to understand how video games can help us process this “difference” in a way that mirrors how, after that realization, we had to piece our world together again from scratch. I don’t want to talk about explicitly “queer” games (which are often very fucking stupid), but rather games like Journey and Shadow of the Colossus (and maybe Undertale) where you have to think seriously about what it is you’re supposed to be doing as the person playing the game.
Maybe I also want to have a chapter about “monsters,” but I’m afraid my bias for monster fucking will shine through a little too hard. Hmmmm. Much to think about.
Also I know two obvious titles to discuss are Silent Hill 2 and The Last of Us, but OH MY GOODNESS people need to stop writing about those games. I love them, but still. Positive change begins with me.
