There's a type of writing about media that I've come to think of as "posting," and I get the feeling that it's probably best for me to avoid.
Does posting prevent real-world horrors? No.
Does posting bring material benefit to anyone? No.
Does posting help people feel less weird and alone? No.
Does posting make people happy? No.
Does posting make me happy? No.
So why subject myself to that sort of writing, you know?
I'm not saying that it's not meaningful for people to engage with serious issues in their writing about media. For me personally, though, I think it's important to find a balance between how serious an issue is and how serious the piece of media is, and I'm not convinced that a balance weighted toward discussions of horrific issues like ecofascism can exist in a productive way in the sort of mass-market games I'd like to write about.
Also, I don't want to linger in that sort of headspace too long, especially not when there are so many real-world horrors that I think more appropriately merit serious attention.
Essentially, when it comes to this sort of longterm research project, I should write about what gives me joy instead of writing about what gives me panic attacks.
