2025 Writing Log, Part 31
Aug. 9th, 2025 07:54 am- I’m back to work on The Demon King, an original fantasy novel about postapocalyptic New Jersey. I got stuck on a particular scene, but now I feel better equipped to tackle it. My mantra is: It doesn’t have to be good! Just write it!!
- I posted the sixth chapter of What Dreams May Come, a Bloodborne-themed Zelda AU, on AO3 (here). This chapter is all about folk horror. It has not just one, but two!! creepy little towns.
- My essay about Deltarune was published on Sidequest (here). This piece features some story analysis and theorizing, as well as a personal anecdote about an extremely awkward moment during my job search in my last year of grad school, but it’s mostly about the joys of retro media and the lost art of having fun.
- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about Tahi Saihate’s novella Astral Season, Beastly Season. I didn’t like this book, which belongs to the unfortunate genre of “nepo baby gets published.” I pulled my punches in the review, but oh man. This book is so bad that it made me angry.
- I want to tidy up my WIP art folder, and this week I cleaned up and colored an old sketch of Rotana, the Gerudo archaeologist from Breath of the Wild. I have a soft spot for this character, who’s charmingly enthusiastic about her research and always gives Link fun sidequests. Because a portrait of an NPC isn’t going to get notes anyway, I was a bit self-indulgent and drew her without the stupid Hylian elf ears. In any case, I posted the piece on Tumblr (here).
Not much going on this week. Just enjoying the lovely late summer weather. 🍃
