2025 Writing Log, Part 37
Sep. 20th, 2025 08:45 am- I finished my outline draft of Chapter 20 of The Demon King, an original fantasy novel. It’s very rough, so now I’m going back and writing the chapter for real. It’s a good chapter, I think. It’s got a fun twist at the end, and the two primary characters are finally in the same space and enjoying one another’s company.
- I’m continuing to edit The Legend of the Princess, a Zelda/Ganondorf fanfic novel I wrote back in 2018/19. It’s not bad, but it definitely needs work. This week I tackled two more chapters. I also updated the story tags and added the new cover illustration, which the artist posted on Tumblr (here).
- Anta is amazing to work with, by the way. She creates gorgeously stylized fantasy illustrations, character portraits, and book covers, and you can find her portfolio on Cara (here).
- I finished a short fic called “Silence,” this year’s spooky Legend of Zelda story. This one is about the horrors witnessed by Ravio prior to the beginning of A Link Between Worlds. It’s absolute eighth-grade goth shit, but I committed myself to embracing the cringe and had a great time.
- I’d like to contribute some stories to the Final Fantasy VI Celebration 2025 event, which is taking place this October on Tumblr (here). This week, for the first day’s “Introduction” prompt, I wrote a vignette recounting the opening of the game from the perspective of one of the soldiers escorting Terra to Narshe.
- I began putting together story ideas for a new chapbook called “Ruins.” Instead of an actual short story collection, I’d like this one to be more of a cycle of themed flash fiction along the lines of my “Haunted Houses” zine (on Itchio here).
- I wrote the first story in the Ruins zine. It’s called “Dreamcore Limited,” and it’s about two high school friends who visit a dead mall after dropping out of college and moving back in with their parents. This is very Night in the Woods coded, but I wanted to do my own take on the scenario.
- I sent a query for An Unfound Door to another agent this week. I also prepared cover letters for two more agents who will hopefully open to queries in early October.
- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about Retrograde, a new translation of some of the early short fiction of Osamu Dazai, an extremely influential figure in modern Japanese literature.
- I posted a second review this week (here) about Lost Souls Meet Under a Full Moon, one of the rare examples of Japanese “relaxing fiction” that’s actually interesting to read. This book isn’t even remotely literary, but its worldbuilding is surprisingly well-constructed.
- Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is now scheduled to be released on November 6. I don’t have any plans to buy a Switch 2, and it’s unlikely that I’ll play the game anytime soon. Still, I love the new artwork for the character Sonia, who is depicted as wielding a longbow. I have an unapologetic fetish for archers (especially if their arms are bare), and I’m in the process of drawing fanart. I’m still working on pose studies, but hopefully I should have something cool to share soon.
I’ve been in a horrible mood all week. This might be nothing more than the change in season, but I have a feeling it has more to do with being expected to bear silent witness to racially-motivated murder at home and an ongoing genocide abroad. I wish this somehow got easier to deal with on a daily basis, but it never does.
Meanwhile, my Pomeranian has noticed that looking at my phone makes me angry, so she’s begun attacking it whenever she sees it in my hand. What a good and smart little creature!
