- I’m still working on Chapter 20 of The Demon King. It’s good I’m taking it slow, because I ended up restructuring the chapter. Better to do it right the first time instead of having to delete and rewrite major sections.

- I posted my second piece of flash fiction for the Final Fantasy VI Celebration 2025 fan event. “Why I Run Long Distances” is about why Locke goes off on his own in the World of Ruin, a choice that I didn’t understand when I was younger and still feel ambivalent about now. I don’t think I got Locke’s voice right, but I still wanted to give his decision the gravity it deserves. In any case, you can read the piece on Tumblr (here).

- I got started on the next story for my Ruins zine. This one is called “Acorns,” and it’s about a woman who helps a baby boar climb out of a concrete drainage ditch. The boar’s mother arrives shortly after, and she tells her baby that the woman might be the last human they ever see. This story was inspired by (this) adorable video on Tumblr.

- I also went back to the story “Pillars” (about an abandoned dentist’s office) that I wrote last week for the Ruins zine. I decided that the narrator is actually kind of an interesting person, so I expanded the story to allow more room for his voice.

- I queried a pixel artist I admire, Dinchen, about creating the cover for the Ruins zine, and she accepted the commission! I was really nervous about this, and I’m glad it worked out.

- I’m still chipping away at tradpub. This week I queried my gothic fantasy novel An Unfound Door with two more agents. Unfortunately these are not the two agents I planned to query this week, both of whom opened to queries again but announced that they’re no longer interested in fiction. I really can’t overemphasize how much everything changes from week to week.

- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about The Woman Dies, a collection of flash fiction that responds to various aspects of pop culture in clever and surprising ways. The stories are all over the place, but this is a fun book.

- This week I’ve been using my account on Bluesky to highlight some of the minicomics available through the ShortBox Comics Fair. I’d love to read and review more of these comics, but… I already spent all my money for this month…

- I drew a portrait of Terra for the Final Fantasy VI Celebration 2025 and posted it on Tumblr (here). This illustration is nothing special, but I figure that the world can always use more Terra.

I remember there being a post on Tumblr that said something along the lines of “someone should give me a medal for turning off the computer instead of replying to stupid bullshit,” and that was me this past week regarding the new Sora AI video generator. In a media ecosystem that privileges advertiser-friendly slop, I think I’d like to devote more time to writing highly specific pornography.
