queer is not a slur, stop drinking the TERF koolaid

The reason people are upset about the word queer is that it’s a unifying term. You can say you’re queer and all people will know is that you’re part of the community. But you can’t say you’re LGBT, you have to say you’re gay or trans or ace. They don’t want you to be ambiguously queer. They want you to say which kind of queer you are so they can decide whether you’re undesirable.

I don't have any strong feelings about identifying as queer, but it's been my experience that people who write things like "the q-slur" also tend to have incomprehensible DNI lists in their social media bios.

This is a shame, because I get the feeling that these people (many of whom are no longer kids) are isolating themselves from broader communities of LGBTQ+ support and belonging. There are so many people in creative industries trying to give opportunities to emerging LGBTQ+ creators, and I don't think something like "DNI if you use the q-slur" in the social media bio attached to a portfolio is doing anyone any favors. This is fine if you're selling stickers on Etsy, I guess, but maybe not so much if you want a job with an actual studio. Like I said, it's a shame.

Also much love to people who aren't comfortable with specific labels, as well as people pushing back against their labels being turned into a marketing demographic. All the love in the world.
