rynlingIt’s been my experience that an extended period of online harassment comes my way every four years. The wheel has turned since 2022, and here we are again. I was thinking that I might preempt the harassment this year by openly posting the sort of discourse that will make me a target.
- I’m thinking it’s finally time to write a well-researched essay about Ganondorf’s green skin. I’m going to keep this off Tumblr (and Twitter, obviously), but I do want the fact that this is a direct reference to white supremacist propaganda to be an issue that someone has posted about in advance of the upcoming live-action Zelda movie.
- There’s an ice-cold take circulating in the Zelda fandom that it’s somehow racist for Wind Waker Ganondorf to reflect on what it meant to be a member of a “criminal” ethnicity forced to endure a harsh environment in enforced isolation. What I’d like to argue isn’t that the desert is “bad”; but rather that the one of the functions of imperialism is to dislocate and concentrate minorities in marginal territories while denying us access to the trade and resources that have historically made life in extreme climates manageable.
- I’m glad Ganondorf punched those kids. Good for him. Absolute power move on his part to show Link and Zelda/Tetra/Sheik what they’re up against while still letting them roam free. And also: I always love when the “good guys” have to face real consequences for choosing violence.
- I wish Ganondorf would punch the “queer is a slur” kids honestly. I’m feeling like this year I’d really like to embrace the beauty of slippage and transition and ambiguity. I don’t want this to be entirely an angry response to misguided bigotry, but more of an expression of the queer joy of refusing to fit into straight boxes.
I’m not saying that I want to be harassed, or that I think it’s fun to argue with chucklefucks on the internet. Obviously not. Still, if I’m going catch heat anyway, I might as well have the satisfaction of starting the fire myself.
