An Unfound Door isn’t an adventure story, though it starts as one.
The main character, Agnes, has no special abilities or special destiny. The deuteragonist, Fhiad, is talented in an academic way that isn’t useful to the plot. Neither character is necessarily bad at what they’re supposed to be doing, but neither is heroic; they’re ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.
An Unfound Door is a story about accepting failure, and about grief and moving on. The characters learn to let go of the people they’re supposed to be so that they can become the people they’ve always wanted to be, and they help each other work through the regret of turning their backs on large problems so that they can focus on the smaller issues they can actually address.
An Unfound Door is very much a story about surviving late-stage capitalism, but it’s also about giant castles and deep forests and underground cities and magical libraries and decaying grandeur and cursed relics and shapeshifting wizards. And, despite everything, it’s about love and friendship and hope for the future.
...which is all well and good, but “tone” and “themes” are difficult to convey in a one-page cover letter! I will keep editing and adjusting and refining and submitting, though.
