Cassette Boy is an isometric Zeldalike adventure game with Game Boy style retro graphics. It’s like a combination between Tunic (in its isometric Zelda-ness) and Fez, in that you can freely switch the perspective at 90-degree angles.
The perspective switch happens very fast, visually speaking, and you’ll need to use it a lot. This gave me intense motion sickness. The quick alteration of (green-tinted) black-and-white Game Boy graphics also creates something of a strobe effect, which adds to the eyestrain. I couldn’t make it to half an hour of playtime, because 25 minutes with this game made me feel like I’d been in a car wreck.
If you are one of the (many) people who couldn’t handle the headache-inducing visual strain of the rapid menu scrolling in Echoes of Wisdom, or if you’re photosensitive, Cassette Boy probably isn’t for you. The video and animated GIFs on the game’s Steam page probably aren’t for you either, so take care.
Also, based on the 25 minutes I played, the writing is as basic as the graphics, and the puzzles feel dependent on arbitrary limitations that aren’t properly explained.
The conceit of solving spatial puzzles by making objects “disappear” through perspective shifts is a neat idea, I guess, but I ended up returning this game for a refund.
