2026 Writing Log, Part Twelve
Mar. 28th, 2026 08:26 am- This week I finished Chapter 9 of The Archives of Hyrule, a Legend of Zelda Modern AU based on Tears of the Kingdom. I also outlined + got started on Chapter 10.
- I posted Chapter 3 on AO3 (here). This short chapter is about Zelda and Riju having a lunch date, and it also introduces Impa, the story’s antagonist (sort of). Of course Ganon is the real antagonist, but Impa is definitely up to some shady business herself. I love morally dubious older women!!
- I drew a portrait of Zelda from this AU and posted it on Tumblr (here). Her design is super basic, but it’s good to start somewhere. I’m also gearing up to start drawing Dragon Age style tarot backgrounds, and this piece documents my first baby steps in that direction.
- I finally finished the first draft of “The Deadlands,” a Final Fantasy XII story about Ashe in the magically irradiated ruins of Nabudis. Just this week I got to the point in my current playthrough of the game where I can access this area, but my party was immediately wiped out. Now that I think about it, FFXII was Dark Souls a full five years before Dark Souls.
- Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been working on a series of darkly comedic flash fiction stories about a plague doctor. I don’t want to jinx the project by talking about it too much, but this week I wrote a short comedy sketch about poisonous mushrooms. Any mushroom can be poisonous with the right encouragement!
- After a ton of additional editing and formatting work, I posted a free digital copy of my new short fiction zine, Ruins, on Itch.io (here). I’m not going to boost this anywhere until the print version is ready, but it’s a cool little zine. I’m biased, of course, but I’m a big fan of the front cover pixel art by Dinchen.
- I edited my academic essay about indie comics publishing ONE MORE TIME and sent it off to the editors. Hell yes putting in the time and effort to make something shine.
- No book review this week. Maybe no book review next week either. Idk man, I need to prioritize deadlines at the moment.
- Those deadlines are: an academic book review + a review of a comic anthology that’s coming out in April. I’m writing both reviews at a pace of literally one or two sentences a day, but putting in the work every day means that it’s only a matter of time before the projects are finished.
This week’s theme is slow but steady. Everything will get done eventually. 🐢
