2023 Writing Log, Part 42
Nov. 27th, 2023 07:58 am- I finished “King Mode,” a short slice-of-life Bowser/Luigi story loosely based on Super Mario Bros. Wonder. I posted it on AO3 (here). This may be one of the silliest things I’ve ever written, but I regret nothing.
- I did a second-pass edit on Chapter 9 of An Unfound Door. Parts of this chapter were really rough, so the edits and rewrites took a full two weeks.
- I’m currently writing Chapter 12. I’ve got the chapter divided into five scenes, and I’ve written two of them so far. Slow but steady wins the race.
- I commissioned Samijen to draw an illustration for an Unfound Door, and we’ve been working on creating a design for the second main character, Fhiad. I posted a bit of the initial work on Dreamwidth (here).
- I wrote a mini-review of Yoko Komori’s graphic novel Mermaid Scales and Town of Sand for Women Write About Comics. This is probably my favorite manga that I’ve read in translation this year.
- My observation that “it’s something of a relief that my own art is so shit that no one will ever confuse it for AI” pulled me out of a two-month art block. I did a pastel-colored study of a spotted lanternfly, an infamously invasive species that lives quite happily in the wild plants that finally started to sprout in my tiny concrete backyard. As far as bugs go, they’re very handsome, and I posted the piece on Tumblr (here).
- I’ve had a stupid two-panel Tears of the Kingdom comic sitting in my draft folder for months, and I finally finished it and posted it on Tumblr (here). I’m not sure if this joke actually works, but I decided not to care.
I also played some video games this week. Damn I love video games!!

Date: 2023-12-01 05:24 pm (UTC)There are a lot of stories about bullying in Japanese graphic novels, and I was pleased to see that's not a direction this story takes. One of the things I appreciate about grown-audience stories concerning the experience of being a kid is that it's always good and interesting to see child characters behaving naturally with each other. The plot has a lot of forward momentum, but the characters are all very gentle. It's warm summer vibes all around.
